Winter Series Wrap Up

Saturday 28th was the final round of the Bates Close Contact Winter Series - this final round carried double points for the series. It saw a tense win to Airlie McBride on JUST OURS who was the only combination to jump a clear round under the time allowed. Four other horses jumped clean but all incurred time faults. 2nd & 3rd went to R. Johnstone on VALBURG & ALAMO BAY. As the series points were tallied, ALAMO BAY was the most successful horse, but as the series organiser, course builder and part owner of the horse, I chose not to claim any of the series prizes.
Therefor the winner of the saddle for 2001 is Airlie McBride & JUST-OURS who finished just 1 point ahead of Jervase Prime on SADDLE-UP HIGH PLACES and 3rd (for the 3rd year running) going to Kirsten Coote on TURBULENCE. Both these ladies won great prizes of jump-wings and stands kindly donated by Australian Showjumping Supplies from Yea.
Unfortunately, Airlie, who is an aerobics instructor at Broadford and Kilmore, wont be getting a lot of use out of her new Bates Close Contact saddle for a while as she is about to depart to West Australia for 12 months to work as a dump truck driver at an iron-ore mine! Airlie is also considering putting her lovely little mare, JUST OURS in foal, when she decides on a suitable stallion.
The series was well supported, especially the freshmans, although the competition numbers were down a little on previous years. It was great to see a few more pony-clubbers and new faces, coming along and utilising these training days.
